What To Bring & How To Prepare
When you’re ready to explore a restoration or revival, a little preparation can make the process smoother and more intentional. It’s incredibly helpful if you can bring:
- Any documentation you have for the piece: appraisals, gemstone certificates, or old receipts. These give us insight into what we’re working with—stone quality, metal type, and any important details that might not be obvious at first glance.
- A rough working budget in mind. You don’t need an exact number, but a range helps us guide design decisions, suggest realistic options, and be transparent about what’s possible within your comfort zone.
How We Approach Restorations at Viya
Heirloom jewelry can carry up to generations of memories, stories, and family history. It's more than something you wear—it's a connection to the people and moments that came before you.
The challenge is that many heirlooms don’t quite feel “you.” The metal may be worn, the style may feel dated or too bold, or the proportions may not fit your daily life. Restoration and redesign allow you to honor the original while creating something you’re excited to wear now. Our goal is to honor that legacy by restoring or redesigning each piece with you in mind, giving it new life while preserving the meaning that makes it worth passing down for generations to come.
1. Listening to the story
Before we talk about design, we talk about the story. Who did this belong to? What do you love about it? What feels wrong or unwearable? Understanding the emotional context helps us decide what must stay and what can evolve.
2. Evaluating the piece
We carefully examine your jewelry to assess the condition of the metal, prongs, and gemstones, identify any structural wear or damage, and evaluate how the piece has held up over time. Combined with any history or documentation you share, this allows us to understand what should be preserved, what needs to be reinforced, and how to ensure your restored piece is beautiful, durable, and ready for everyday wear.
3. Designing the revival
From there, we explore ways to reflect you while honoring the original. That might mean:
- Resetting stones into a new setting or silhouette
- Updating the metal color or band style
- Combining elements from multiple heirlooms into one significant piece
- Simplifying an ornate design into something more minimal and modern

4. The careful, technical work
Once a design is chosen, we move into the bench work:

- Rebuilding the new design around your existing materials wherever possible

Recycling metal and honoring value
In some cases, the original metal may no longer be the best choice for your new design due to its condition, durability, or aesthetic. When possible, we can recycle the precious metal from your heirloom piece and apply its value toward your new design. This allows the original materials to remain part of the piece's story while helping offset the cost of your redesign.
